Security Dynamics of CPEC 2.0 and Chinese Strategic Interests in Pakistan
The paper discusses the security dynamics of CPEC 2.0 and its effects on the interests of China in Pakistan. It employs mixed-methods comparative case study to analyze key-informant opinion, policy documents and open-source security data. The research concludes that CPEC 2.0 functions in high violence areas especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan areas with significant assaults on Chinese citizens. CPEC-related incidents are less often than other terrorist acts; however, they cause serious reputational and political consequences, which aggravates the risk of investment and gives rise to securitization. According to the paper, the protection of corridors should be centered on adaptive coordination between agencies, accountability, and community involvement, but not on physical aspects of protection. It provides a model of a connection between strategic competition and securitization, showing the role of security governance on the sustainability of CPEC 2.0.
